Legend states that the Apostle Peter landed at "Gradus Ad" in the I st cent. A.D. At the place where he celebrated Mass, a basilica was founded between X and 'XI cent. Here, where the river Arno meets the sea, stood the Basilica of St. Piero a Grado built in Romanesque style. Today, situated seven kilometers from Pisa, the Basilica stands solitary and imposing.
A visit to a place so rich in mysticism, with its medieval frescoes and traces of ancient ruins, is really worth while.
